The Water Directorate of Körös Region does for the state administration functions of beyond settlement water management, as well as, for operating, maintaining and developing the state water management facilities, for the activity of water resources development, hydrography, and for organizing, managing and executing water damage prevention on the field of activity. The directorate executes its tasks with strength 400 persons via its center in Gyula, its section engineering of Gyula, Szarvas and Szeghalom, and its Technical Security Service.
The entire catchment area of the Körös rivers is 27,537 square kilometers, more than its half is on the territory of Romania. The water level of the rivers is not uniform; the distribution of incoming surface waters is extreme. The floods are heavy, but there is often a period of water shortage characterized by enhanced sensitivity of water quality. Most of our region is a low flood plain, 69 % of the field of activity is an area protected by dikes with agriculture and food industry being particularly sensitive against water damage prevention. High disposition of excess surface water formation and high level of structural building up characterize our territory.
The length of first-rate flood dikes is 340,1 km, and 101 km second-rate flood dike belongs to the supervision of the directorate. Most of the dikes were built in the last century, since then they have been undergoing continuous development. Presently 52,3 % of the flood control main lines has been embanked on the appropriate size. The 423 dead beds crossing our main protection lines weaken the flood control protectiveness of the dikes and the inhomogeneous structure shaped owning to the several buildings on. Some dike sections became split in the last years of draught.
In the valley of Körös rivers the construction of detention reservoirs was started following the flood in the year of 1970: in 1975-79 the Mályvádi reservoir on the Fekete Körös, in 1975 the Mérgesi reservoir at the delta of the Kettos-Körös and the Sebes-Körös. On the right bank of the Fehér-Körös, the Kisdelta impounding reservoir was built in 1997-98. With their temporary water storing capacity of 188 million m3 these reservoirs enable the reduction of flood levels of critical rate.
